The 5th annual Battle of the Books competition at STISD was held on January 24 in Mercedes. It is the second year since STISD has joined the Region One competition.
Students form a team of three with a possible fourth member acting as alternate. For the first round of competition, there are three rounds consisting of a written exam where the top two scoring teams advance to district level competition and finally the Regional competition.
This team that won the district competition competes against other schools in the Valley for the Battle of the Books Championship. The two BETA teams were Team Garza and Team Perez. Team Garza members were: Abigail Alvarez, Elizabeth Lozoya, Jane Seong and Evelyn Rodriguez, and Team Perez members were: Sofia Arredondo, Larah Gonzalez and Sofia Valente.
The district champions who will represent our district are from Science Academy and it is the first time they took the championship away from the previously undefeated Medical Academy teams.
Even though our BETA teams did not make it to the Regional round, we are very proud of them and they did a great job at the district competition. We hope more students will join teams next year as every year the competition gets more and more exciting!
To join a team, you have to find a teacher sponsor, read five books that are selected by a Region One committee, and have three or four members. Visit the Gateway to the World library to find out more!
