On December 30th, 2018, BTS’s Jimin released his first original solo song titled “Promise”. Jimin’s solo song gathered a lot of attention and even broke SoundCloud’s 24-hour record with more than 8.5 million streams. The record was previously set by Drake last May with his Pusha T/Kanye West diss-track, “Duppy Freestyle” with 4.9 million streams in the first 24 hours of its release.

This record enabled “Promise” to hold the No. 1 spot on both SoundCloud’s Top 50 and New & Hot charts for 48 hours. “Promise” is a mellow pop ballad, fronted by Jimin’s evocative singing accompanied only by an acoustic guitar and some gentle vocal layering.

At the moment of its release Jimin took to twitter to say, “Everyone, you’ve waited a long time, right? I finally shared my own song with the public. This is a song for me, as it is a song for you. It’s the first time and it is still premature but please enjoy it. Thank you for waiting, ARMY.” “Promise” was co-composed by Jimin with producer Slow Rabbit, who also arranged the song, while lyrics were co-written by Jimin and fellow band member RM.

The lyrics to “Promise” are below:

[Verse 1]

I sit alone, slumped down

And I break myself down with these thoughts

You probably don’t even know

When you started hurting me

[Pre-Chorus]

You’re hurting too ‘cause you’re mine

I just want to blow your mind

You’re only drifting further away like this

I say that it’s all fine

The truth is that’s a lie

[Chorus]

I want to be your light, baby

You should be your light

So you won’t hurt anymore, so you can smile more

I want you to be your night, baby

You could be your night

I’ll be honest with you tonight.

[Pre-Chorus]

You’re hurting too ‘cause you’re mine

I just want to blow your mind

You’re only drifting further away like this

I say that it’s all fine

That’s not what I truly think

[Chorus]

I want to be your light, baby

You should be your light

So you won’t hurt anymore, so you can smile more

I want you to be your night, baby

You could be your night

I’ll be honest with you tonight.

[Bridge]

Now promise me, oh, oh

Several times a day, oh, oh

Even if you feel that you are alone, oh, oh

Don’t throw yourself away, oh, oh

Oh, oh, oh, oh, hold on for a moment

Intertwine our pinkies

And promise me now, oh, oh, oh, oh

The song is separate from the group’s work and is available to stream on SoundCloud.
